Professional Biography

Dr Aisha Mohyuddin started her career in molecular biology and human genetics in 1994 at the Biomedical and Genetic Engineering Division, Dr. A Q Khan Research Laboratories. She completed her PhD in 2001 on the Genetic Diversity in Pakistani Populations which provided first comprehensive DNA based compilation of transplantation antigen (Human Leukocyte Antigen, HLA) frequencies in major Pakistani ethnic groups. Dr. Mohyuddin conducted population genetic research of the Y chromosome that led to the identification of several novel molecular markers that are of importance in population and forensic genetics. She carried out several projects on mutation screening and the genetic association of genes with various diseases including rheumatic heart disease, cancer and inherited eye disorders.  She spent nearly ten years teaching at the Shifa College of Medicine where she developed and implemented an updated curriculum on Molecular Medicine for medical undergraduates. Dr. Mohyuddin joined the National University of Medical Sciences, Rawalpindi in 2017 and is involved in the establishment of the NUMS Institute of Advanced studies and Research, Rawalpindi, a state-of-the-art translational research institute. In recognition of her research contributions, she was awarded the Pride of Performance by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 2001, the Junior Scientist Award of the Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences and was selected as a Young Affiliate of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2007.
